What is Venous Thromboembolism?

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is an umbrella term that includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).  VTE refers to the situation in which a blood clot forms in a vein.  A blood clot occurs whenever the blood thickens and clumps together.

Deep vein thrombosis is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein inside the body, usually in the thighs, lower legs, or the pelvic cavity.  If the vein is completely blocked by the clot, symptoms may include pain, swelling, redness, and increasing warmth in the are.  The clots that form in the thighs are the most likely to break off and travel through the body.  A loose clot is called an embolus.

When an embolus travels through the blood to an artery in the lungs, it is called a pulmonary embolism.  This blockage in an artery supplying the lungs can result in permanent damage to the lungs or another organ in the body.  PE may cause no symptoms at all, or it may cause shortness of breath, or pain in a portion of the lung.  PE can result in death.

Many studies have found that women taking Yaz, Yasmin, and other drsp-containing oral contraceptives are at a higher risk for DVT and PE.  The consequences can be deadly.  If you or a loved one have taken Yaz or another fourth generation birth control pill and have suffered from venous thromboembolism, contact an attorney with Kirkendall Dwyer LLP as soon as possible.  Let us help you recover the compensation you deserve.
