Dangerous Diabetes Drugs

Medical Journal Links Byetta, Januvia to Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer, and Thyroid Cancer

After reviewing the data from the adverse events reported to the FDA, researchers found that there was a six-fold increase in association between pancreatitis and Byetta and Januvia.  These results were published in the medical journal Gastroenterology.

The scientists found other associations as well, including a threefold increase in pancreatic cancer, and a four-fold increase in thyroid cancer reports with the drugs.

All scientists and researchers do not agree.  Many side with Byetta and Januvia’s safety, pointing out that the increased awareness of these side effects can lead to higher than usual rates of reporting.

Regardless of whether this is true or not, it is undeniable that as time has gone on and these drugs have been on the market longer and longer, more and more complications have been reported and come out in studies.  This has led to more studies being required of the manufacturers by the FDA, and to more warnings coming from the FDA as well.

With drug companies looking for their GLP-1 drugs to get approved for new indications by the FDA, including as a treatment for obesity, it is important that these safety concerns be taken seriously.  Obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and if these drugs gain approval, more people than ever will be at risk of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer.
